Many children with disabilities are unable to participate fully in the festive season; some are unable to read a book or play with toys without support. Children with disabilities often are unable to attend holiday programmes, let alone a fun camp with their siblings and peers -the level of support required is prohibitive to their attendance.

The vision for the camp came from one of Te Karaka Foundation’s generous donors – Nancy Mills, who has a passion for helping children. With Nancy’s generosity and a positive response from Conductive Education, the concept of Club R&R was born seeking to provide a safe, healthy and appropriate camp for children attending Conductive Education in Taranaki, along with their siblings. Through much dedication of a fantastic Team at Conductive Education, generosity of George Mason and the support of many volunteers the first ever week-long Club R&R in Taranaki was delivered in January 2019.

The generosity of Nancy Mills didn’t end there. In 2019 Nancy established with Te Karaka the Club R&R Endowment Fund that will provide funding for the future Holiday Camps to allow the Taranaki children with disabilities to have experiences they normally would not have access to and enjoy their time together. We hope that more generous people will donate to the Fund to support this fantastic Camp now and forever.

This year, with the support received from Nancy Mills, George Mason and generous members of our community the Conductive Education Taranaki offered their children the Awesome Camp for Awesome Kids, with a focus on what the children CAN do and how they CAN do it.

We had our second Camp – Club R&R in January 2020 and gave the children an opportunity to have fun and enjoy a week with their peers and siblings -something they cannot do without support. We had a fantastic crew of volunteers and team members working at the Camp. Club R&R offers a unique opportunity for parents to know that their children are safe and having fun, at the time of year that can be very stressful for families living with disabilities. Parents are also able to spend quality time with their other children and network with other parents with similar life challenges.

CE of Te Karaka Foundation – Grace Wesolowska says ”Through donations from our generous donors and the Taranaki community we gave these children the best gift ever – A Holiday Camp catering, especially for their needs. I believe that all of us should opt for the gifts of kindness, not the gifts that will end on the landfill.”

We are very grateful to our generous donors, Team at Conductive Education and many volunteers for making Taranaki and New Zealand a more inclusive, empowered and supportive community.
